We are building a database of patients who are interested in being considered for our severe asthma research studies. Patients can add themselves to the database by completing a short screening survey. If we have a study for which you may be a good fit, we will contact you for a more detailed discussion of our studies and your current health/medical history.
Needing steroid burst (like prednisone) is a warning sign
If you’ve needed an oral steroid burst for an asthma flare, it often means asthma control could be improved. After one flare, the chance of more flares can be higher—especially if nothing changes.
Knowing your baseline lung function matters
A breathing test gives you a baseline “lung number,” similar to checking blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar. If you have asthma, lung function is part of long-term health—and it’s helpful to know where you’re starting.
Steroid bursts affect the whole body
Over time, repeated steroid bursts are linked with higher chances of issues like high blood pressure, high blood sugar (diabetes), weight gain, bone thinning (osteoporosis), and infections. That’s why doctors try to keep steroid use as low and as rare as possible.
Steroid bursts add up over the years
Steroids can be lifesaving when needed—but they aren’t like an over-the-counter pain pill that simply “wears off.” Each course can add a bit of wear and tear, and those effects may accumulate.
Asthma attacks can slowly reduce lung function
Lungs naturally change with age, but repeated asthma attacks can speed that process up. Preventing flare-ups is just as important as treating them.
Airway changes can be hard to undo
Years of inflammation can lead to airway changes (a bit like scarring). Treatments can improve symptoms and breathing, but some structural changes aren’t always fully reversible—another reason to step in early.
Details vary by study and will be discussed at time of screening. Enrolled participants may receive at no cost: study medication, study-related care, and compensation for time & travel. If at any time you want us to remove your information from our database, please contact us at miasthmaresearch@med.umich.edu. We will delete your responses promptly.
